When I first started capturing families, I was nervous. At the time I had only really done travel photography and worked as an assistant with weddings and other various corporate shoots, so families was a whole new ball game. I’ll admit I wasn’t crazy on capturing families at first, I didn’t really get kids, I only had a baby at the time and she certainly wasn't running around causing a ruckus…then…but as my own kids got older and I captured more and more families I really started to fall in love with it in a way I never thought I would. Now if you were to ask me what I love to photograph, families is at the top of my list! I love the interactions between siblings and parents snuggling up their little ones. I love to capture mom and dad all alone just for a moment, because let’s face it, the last time they probably had a nice picture taken of just them was at their wedding.
I believe having family photos done at least once a year is so important! Taking pictures of your children with your own camera on the day to day is amazing and is something we all do and should do. But so often as parents we fail to get into the photos with our children! Having had only one family session done growing up, I truly wish I had more family photos to look back on, ones with my mom and dad in them!

I’m going to interrupt your scrolling here and just give this session a little background. Kim had reached out to me interested in doing a session featuring her dad’s 1965 Thunderbird. He had spent a lot of time restoring it and it was his baby! He had passed away and since it wasn’t being driven, Kim’s mom Nancy decided it would be best to sell it to another car enthusiast who would give it all the love it deserved. Before selling the car they wanted to make sure they had it documented. They brought along a few momentos including, jackets they used to wear when going for drives, her dad’s white riding cap and my favourite, an old photo of him. I spent some time capturing details of the car before photographing Kim and Nancy with this classic beauty!
