Fernweh Workshop | Part 1 - Family | Salmon Arm | West Kootenay Family Photographer

Gahhhh!!!! It has been nearly 5 months since I attended the Fernweh Workshop in Salmon Arm with the talented Jayme Ford (The Paper Deer Photography) and Tricia Victoria and I am STILL in complete awe over the entire experience. Not only did I gain valuable knowledge and hands-on training capturing the most gorgeous families and couples, but I walked out of there with a handful of new, like-minded friends which in itself is so powerful!

I had been on the fence for a while trying to decide if I really wanted to put together a blog showcasing images from this workshop. After all, I was just along for the ride, capturing from the distance as a second shooter would do…not to mention the 25 other photographers capturing the same thing. However, after following along on everyone’s journey and seeing the “same” photos I took, I realized that they are not at all the same. We each have our own eye, angles and editing style. Most of all, I am freaking proud of the images that were created even if I wasn’t the one posing our subjects. Watching Jayme and Tricia pose their families and couples was inspiring and I am so excited to share a two-part blog series showcasing what was captured during that whirlwind day.

We started our first day off shooting with Amy (who is also a wickedly talented Calgary based photographer, Modern Nest Photography) along with her two boys and partner Jordy. These four came all the way to Salmon Arm from Alberta just to be captured by Jayme and all of us workshop attendees. I think it’s and understatement to say that we are all over the moon by the end of their session. Not only was the location absolute perfection and the light was pristine, but the connection they had as a family was just so beautiful that thinking of it now gives me goosebumps!

Our second family session of the day was set for the evening down at the beach where our models were a gorgeous family of four: Vanessa Morris (who also happens to be an amazing photographer in the Shuswaps) with her husband Cameron and their two beautiful girls. It was a 100% different experience from the morning as capturing a newborn and toddler would be! I loved watching Jayme navigate capturing the toddler life. Allowing kids to be kids during these sessions is so important and something that really resonates with me, especially because I have young children of my own.

Overall, the family portion of the workshop exceeded my expectations! Stay tuned to the blog for part 2 of the Fernweh Workshop! Up next, couples with Tricia Victoria!
